Checklist for Day 1
Memorial Day is around the corner, finals are a thing of the past and the time for internships is upon us. Our summer edition kicks off next Wednesday, but in the meantime here's a First Day Checklist you can take with you to the beach, some kid's pool party or wherever you're going to pay homage to various fallen soldiers.
Research - Read a major newspaper and also a periodical pertaining to your industry the week leading up to your internship. It's a very effective way to ensure a good first impression with your summer supervisor.
Attire - If you have a friend at the company who won't stab you in the back, ask him or her about proper decor. If you don't know anyone and feel awkward talking to HR, play it safe and overdress. The worst case scenario is that people might mistake you for being earnest.
Location - Find out how long your commute is. You don't need to be stressing transportation on your first day.
Breakfast - Allot some time to get your bearings over a quick meal near your office, but make sure not to eat loads of poppy bagels. There's a good chance you're going to have to take a drug test and you don't want to be testing positive for opium.
Attitude - The ideal intern views the summer as a long distance race, and the more casual among them consider it nothing more than a very long walk. Be friendly on the first day, but don't feel like you need to sell yourself. If anyone cares enough to ask about your goals, avoid phrases like "I gotta eat." Just stick to vague remarks about gaining professional experience.
Leather Bound Folder - Leave this corporate Trapper Keeper at home. All your handshakes will be awkward as you tuck it ‘neath your arm, and co -workers and fellow interns will immediately write you off as annoying and obsequious. This type of folder is Intern Memo's least favorite piece of luggage.
Make sure you can check off all of the above, then go in and kill it on your first day.
Have a great weekend. We'll see you next week.
