On-Campus Housing...Not Half-Bad
Like most things in life, you need to start thinking about housing a lot earlier than you probably think you need to. Unless you want to wake up in some co-ed room in a wack youth hostel on the Upper West Side of Manhattan (that actually doesn't sound like the worst thing in the world), it's time to get cracking on summer plans.
Living in a college dorm for the summer is sort of a catch-22 in the sense that it will probably be overpriced, you'll invariably be exposed to loads of blockheads who want to spend every second getting wasted in common rooms, and you'll always have to be worrying about signing in your guests. But it is also incredibly convenient, and being in a living environment with your peers might ultimately be conducive to fun and exciting activities.
The truth is, if you're not totally familiar with the city you're interning in, or you don't have so many friends there, living in one of these dorms is a really good choice. Say what you will about randomly friendly people who will probably invite you out with them, but there are a lot of worse things.
So if you know where you're going to be next summer, you need to act soon. NYU fills up faster than a chemical beaker during a titration gone awry and starts accepting applications at the end of January. GW and Georgetown have the best options in DC. And UCLA is the best LA option because of its central location and the fact that it's not dangerous and scary like USC.
If you don't know where you're going to be yet, or you fashion yourself as an authentic, you're going to have to sublet. That could be fun. Just make sure you're not living miles and miles away from where you're working.
But the overall point, the proverbial bullet point to convey, is to act as soon as you know where you're going to be. You don't want to be in a situation where you're getting gauged on some horrible apartment because you waited until the eleventh hour to find housing.
We'll be back next week with more information on for credit and part-time internships and how this will affect your summer.
Have a great weekend,
